IIITD student wins Microsoft Imagine Cup India Finals

Final year B.Tech student Palash Bansal won 16th addition of Microsoft Imagine Cup India Finals. He along with two other teams, the first and second runner-up will represent India with an all-expenses-paid trip to the World Finals in USA and compete with the best and brightest teams from across the globe for the title of World Champion and a chance to win $ 100,000 prize money.

Imagine Cup is a global competition that empowers the next generation of computer science students to team up and use their creativity, passion, and knowledge of technology to create applications that shape how we live, work and play. Every year tens of thousands of students from across the globe compete for cash, travel, and prizes and for the honor of taking home the Imagine Cup!

Palash presented his project RealVol at the Competition. This project has made it possible to view CT and MRI images in a virtual reality environment through a software application. The project aims at helping schools and medical colleges teach anatomy and pathology to trainee doctors, performing surgical simulations apart from diagnostics.

RealVol was started as a research project, has now been packaged as a business model. Explaining the outcome of his project, Palash said, “We have been able to take high-quality photos of the human body through MRI and CT scans for decades. These images enabled doctors to perform less invasive diagnostics on patients in less amount of time. With the development of computer science and technology, we are now able to reconstruct three-dimensional models of the scans through complex algorithms and color them. But, these systems have many limitations now.” Palash has been working on RealVol for over one-and-half-years under the guidance Dr. Ojaswa Sharma in the Graphics Research Group at IIIT-Delhi.
