Inauguration of new campus by Smt. Sheila Dikshit

Chief Guest
Smt. Sheila Dikshit,
Hon'ble Chief Minister, Delhi

The government is keen to develop this institute as the world's best institute in IT and allied fields by offering highly innovative courses.

There would be no dearth of funds for the growth of the institute.

In three years time it has taken shape and we are very very very very deeply impressed.

Construction of a permanent campus for IIIT-Delhi started about four years ago in approximately 25 acres plot of land near Nehru Place. The campus became ready to be operational in summer of this year, and its formal inauguration took place on 29th October, Monday at 11:00 A.M. Smt. Sheila Dikshit, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Delhi, kindly agreed to be the chief guest for this occasion.

The new campus currently has a fully operational Academic block for lectures, an R&D and Office block which houses faculty houses and administrative staff, a Library block which also contains a few labs, a Dining and Recreation centre and a student hostel. Construction of one more student hostel and a faculty residence tower is underway and is expected to finish soon. More details about the new campus is covered here. The new campus is already looking quite green, from point of view of both nature as well as energy usage.

While several newly established institutes in India are facing immense trouble in getting a permanent campus, it is indeed a remarkable achievement that IIIT-Delhi was able to move to its new campus within roughly 4 years of its inception. In fact, Smt. Sheila Dikshit had herself laid the foundation stone of the new campus on 1st July, 2010 when construction was just getting started.

Hon'ble Chief Minister made a few announcements during her speech, including the assurance that there will be no shortage of funds for improvement to IIIT-Delhi's research program. She also announced that students from government schools in Delhi would not have to pay tution fee if they are admitted to IIIT-Delhi. Much to the cheer of staff and students, she announced that the government will build a foot overbridge from Okhla metro station to IIIT-Delhi campus, and that it will be built as soon as possible.
