Saturday, February 22, 2014
Researchers, faculty and students engaged in the field of security and privacy in India came together for keynotes, invited talks, panel discussions, poster presentations and other networking events at the second Security & Privacy Symposium (SPS’14), held at IIT Kanpur from February 20-22.
SPS’14 featured three keynote speeches from eminent people from the US and Germany; nine invited talks and a panel discussion. “Besides, it witnessed five PhD student presentations, 14 posters and two student madness events,” said Dr Ponnurangam Kumaraguru (‘PK’), the founding head of the Cybersecurity Education and Research Centre (CERC) at IIIT-Delhi, who is the co-creator of the Symposium.
Prof. Mustaque Ahamad, one of the Keynote Speakers from GaTech, said that "I am impressed with the quality of students in this Symposium."
This was the second edition of the Security & Privacy Symposium at IIT Kanpur and was as successful as the first one.“Last year, we began this endeavor to bring all the topics related to security and privacy under one roof and build a close-knit community. With the Security & Privacy Symposium 2014, we have continued this effort of strengthening our community of researchers, faculty, and students in security and privacy area in India,” according to the organizers.
“Any average Internet user today has multiple online accounts-with online social media, third-party cloud service providers, online banking services, etc. With such a lifestyle, it is always possible for an individual or a group to become vulnerable to various online security breaches and privacy threats. Researchers are constantly trying to find out solutions to these problems,” they said.
The SPS’14 also witnessed three interesting Workshops on Security Threat Analytics for Large Scale Peer-to-Peer Networks (by Prof. Chittaranjan Hota); Denial of Service Attacks (by Prof. Alwyn Pais); and Cybersecurity on networks and programs (by CERC @ IIITD).
The objective of the symposium was to bring the student, faculty and researcher community in India to deliberate upon the trends and progress in the area of security and privacy; facilitate interaction amongst the Indian fraternity and the International speakers in this field; enhance the state of the art research collaborations amongst various groups; and help build human resources in this emerging area.
